Harris County Emergency Services District 16, Klein Fire Department (“HCESD 16” or “KFD”), alongside regional mutual aid partners, responded to a devastating 2-alarm apartment fire early this morning. Thanks to the heroic, rapid actions of law enforcement, civilians, and arriving fire crews, dozens of lives were saved under extreme conditions.

INCIDENT SUMMARY

• Initial Call: At 1:39 a.m., emergency dispatch received multiple calls reporting a structure fire at an apartment complex in the 4600 block of Cypresswood Dr.
• First Action: Harris County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) deputies, who were responding to an unrelated call nearby, spotted the smoke. Deputies immediately rushed to the scene, knocking on doors to wake residents and rallying civilians to help evacuate the residential building on fire and an adjacent building.
• On-Scene Arrival:  Ponderosa Fire Department  arrived seconds before Klein Fire Department, followed closely by Spring Fire Department. Arriving units found a heavy, advanced fire already breaking through the roof, triggering a 2-11 (multiple alarm) response. A partial structural collapse occurred during operations.

RESCUE OPERATIONS & CASUALTIES

Firefighters faced heavy fire and rapidly deteriorating conditions upon arrival. A total of 13 civilian patients were impacted:

• Rescues: Crews, including Klein FD Engine 37 and Ponderosa Engine 62, aggressively pulled one resident through a window and immediately initiated CPR.
• Transport & Triage: Harris County ESD 11 transported 6 patients to local hospitals. Tragically, despite all life-saving efforts, one victim has passed away from their injuries.
• On-Scene Treatment: 7 additional civilians were evaluated and treated on the scene.
• All occupants have since been accounted for.

  

FIREFIGHTER INJURIES

Due to the intense heat and punishing fire conditions, 5 firefighters were treated on scene for possible smoke inhalation, dehydration, and other heat-related conditions. All firefighters are expected to recover.

 

DISPLACEMENT & DAMAGE

The fire heavily damaged the structure that housed eight 3-bedroom apartment units. Approximately 25 residents have been displaced. Emergency management, the American Red Cross and other relief resources are working to assist these families.

INVESTIGATION

The cause of the fire is currently unknown. Investigators from HCFMO and law enforcement detectives were actively on the scene.
