Inside Klein Fire: Preparing for the New UTMD Anderson Imaging Center

When the new UTMD Anderson Northwest Houston Diagnostic Imaging Center prepared to open its doors in Klein, our firefighters were already inside - not responding to an emergency call, but working to prevent one.

In the weeks leading up to the facility's opening, all first-due shifts from Klein Fire Department completed detailed safety walk-throughs of the site. These visits are a core part of our readiness strategy: understanding a building before the first 9-1-1 call ever comes in.

Crews surveyed the layout, identified access points, reviewed emergency procedures with staff, and familiarized themselves with daily operations. Special attention was given to the MRI suites, which require unique considerations during a fire or medical emergency. Firefighters studied magnetic field hazards, equipment shutdown processes, and safe patient removal routes - all critical knowledge when seconds matter.

These proactive walk-throughs are quiet, behind-the-scenes work, but they are essential to delivering safe, effective emergency response. Preparation like this ensures that if an emergency occurs, our crews already know the building, the equipment, and the safest ways to protect patients and staff.

Emergency Services Districts (ESDs) like Harris County ESD 16, Klein Fire Department are funded by local taxpayers and exist solely to provide fire and emergency medical services to their communities. Stable property and sales tax revenue allows ESDs to invest in the training, equipment, personnel, and planning that make walk-throughs like these possible.

During the recent ESD 16 tax rate cap election, Klein voters were asked to consider adjusting a decades-old cap that had been set when the department was an all-volunteer organization. The proposition passed. Any adjustment will help ensure Klein Fire can continue meeting modern emergency service demands.

Across the state, discussions about the future of ESD funding (primarily via property taxes) have highlighted a simple truth: safeguarding ESDs means safeguarding the people who protect our communities.
