Beyond the Siren

Keeping Safety Ahead of the Curve

From Volunteer Roots to a Growing Community

Dear Neighbors,

The Klein Fire Department exists for one simple reason: to protect lives, property, and the well-being of every family who calls this district home. Every decision we make—every fire station built, every firefighter hired, every piece of equipment purchased—is focused on one goal: ensuring help arrives quickly and effectively when you need it most.

Today, I am writing with urgency and transparency about a challenge our district can no longer afford to ignore.

Our community is growing at an unprecedented pace. New neighborhoods, schools, businesses, and roads are transforming the Klein area faster than at any point in our history. While this growth is a sign of a thriving district, it also places significant and immediate demands on emergency services. Call volumes are rising, response areas are expanding, and the complexity of emergencies we face continues to increase.

Despite this rapid growth, the Klein Fire Department remains constrained by the current tax rate cap—one that was established under very different conditions decades ago. Simply put, our ability to keep pace with community growth has not kept pace with the growth itself.

Without an adjustment to the tax rate cap, our district faces difficult and unavoidable realities:

• Longer response times as stations and personnel fall behind

  demand.

• Increased strain on firefighters and equipment.

• Delayed investments in lifesaving resources.

• Reduced capacity to meet future emergencies safely and effectively.

Public safety is not static—it evolves alongside the community it serves. Fire protection and emergency medical services must grow before service levels are compromised, not after the warning signs become emergencies themselves.

Adjusting the tax rate cap is not about excess or expansion for expansion’s sake. It is about preserving the level of fire and emergency protection our community expects and deserves and ensuring that every resident—new and longstanding—receives the same rapid, professional response in their moment of need.

I want to be clear: this request is driven by responsibility, not convenience. Failing to act now will only make future solutions more costly and more difficult, while placing public safety at greater risk.

We are committed to responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars, transparency in our budgeting process, and open communication with the community. This proposed adjustment is a proactive step to protect the district we all care deeply about—today and for decades to come.

Thank you for taking the time to understand this issue and for your continued trust in the Klein Fire Department. Your safety is, and will always remain, our highest priority.

Respectfully,

Jason L. Catrambone CFO, ECO, GIFireE
