Harris County Emergency Services District 16 and the Klein Volunteer Fire Department know that the children’s safety is a top concern for our residents. Children taken care of by babysitters or home alone are safer when armed with the right knowledge, which is why Klein VFD offers Safe at Home and Safe Sitter courses at no cost to the community.

The two courses, which focus on safe practices for children at home or babysitting in the community, help participants learn a variety of skills from safe kitchen practices to basic first aid. Registration for both classes is required in advance and classes fill quickly.

The Safe at Home course is a 90-minute class offered to children in grades 4 through 6. The course includes sections on indoor and outdoor safety, careful internet usage and when to communicate with an adult when left home alone. The course includes a free dinner and usually runs from 6-7:30 p.m. Upcoming classes are scheduled for July 17, August 28 and September 18. A light dinner is provided for the students.

The Safe Sitter course is conducted from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and is geared for tweens and teens who will be babysitting in the community. The course includes sections on basic safety, child care, first aid and rescue skills as wells as life and business skills. All of the classes for summer 2019 are currently full and there are generally wait times of three to six months, so parents are encouraged to contact the Department to enroll their children as soon as possible. Breakfast and lunch are provided to students.
